A Devonport teenager has been charged in connection with an alleged aggravated carjacking and other offences that occurred in Moonah, Hobart, on Tuesday evening. Tasmania Police confirmed that an 18-year-old man from Devonport was taken into custody following the incident.
According to Tasmania Police, the incident unfolded around 6:25 pm when a man returned to his vehicle on Main Road, Moonah, and was reportedly threatened by another man with what is believed to be a knife. Police allege the 18-year-old man then stole the silver Toyota Camry and drove away, heading towards Creek Road, Moonah.
Police swiftly responded to the report, deploying road spikes to intercept the stolen vehicle. The car was brought to a stop on Pierce Street, Moonah, after which the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot. Officers conducted a search of the surrounding area and successfully located the alleged offender, taking him into custody approximately 7:45 pm. No physical injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Further police investigation determined that the 18-year-old man was reportedly involved in an earlier incident in Moonah on the same day. Police allege he attempted to gain entry to two vehicles parked outside a business in Charles Street, Moonah, shortly after 3:00 pm.
The Devonport man has since been charged with multiple offences, including aggravated carjacking, stealing, evading police, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and unlawfully tampering with a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court this morning, Wednesday, 2 September 2026.
