A new Australian study has shed significant light on the hunting prowess of the extinct thylacine, commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger, revealing its unique predatory style was incomparable to any animal alive today. The research team conducted detailed 3D shape analyses of thylacine skulls alongside 60 species of carnivorous mammals, including big cats and extinct marsupial predators. They discovered that the thylacine’s skull possessed a unique combination of features – an oversized skull, a long and tall upper jaw, and a mace-like widened snout – that does not match any known adaptations of living carnivorous mammals. This “big head, lethal snap” adaptation, while unusual in mammals, is seen in other animals like crocodiles and predatory fish that use fast-snapping jaws for agile prey, according to Professor Weisbecker via AAP News.

The last known thylacine died in Hobart’s Beaumaris Zoo in 1936, marking the end of a lineage that stretched back over 30 million years.
